The profession of orthopedic technology

Orthopedic technicians create aids for people with limited ability to walk, stand or sit. They manufacture insoles, prostheses, orthoses and rehabilitation aids, adapt them individually to the customer and provide information about their use.

The aim is always to improve mobility after an illness, an accident or a congenital limitation or to achieve freedom from pain and physiologically correct movement sequences in order to live as actively and independently as possible. In everyday language, customers come to our practice to see an “orthopaedist” or they say: “You have to go to an orthopedic doctor with this problem”. In the population, the difference between the two job profiles is often not clear. The orthopedist is the doctor who makes the diagnosis and, if necessary, carries out surgical interventions.

Orthopedic technician
We, orthopedic technicians, often work according to the prescription of a general practitioner or specialist, e.g. an orthopedist, who analyzes the clinical picture and makes a diagnosis.

This prescription from the doctor must be submitted for applications and cost estimates, e.g. to the IV, the SUVA, or to the health insurance company for the assumption of the costs of orthopedic technical care. As an orthopedic technician, you combine craftsmanship with medical and technical know-how in your daily work, as well as dealing with people of all ages.

Orthopedic technicians create aids for people with restricted walking, standing or sitting ability. We manufacture insoles, prostheses, orthoses and rehabilitation aids, adapt them individually to the customer and provide information on how to use them.

Departments

Orthotics
Orthotics includes the range of aids that support, straighten and correct a part of the body. These include the well-known shoe inserts, bandages, but also corrective torso corsets and head orthoses for children.

Prosthetics
Prosthetics is about replacing a missing or damaged body part. An endoprosthesis is an artificial joint replacement that is surgically implanted. However, the prostheses that an orthopedist makes usually replace an entire limb or even an extremity. They are attached to the outside and can be put on and taken off independently.

Rehabilitation technology
The field of rehabilitation technology covers a lot. These include wheelchairs (electric, hand, sports and standard wheelchairs), therapy devices and walking aids. These are adapted to the patient and the handling is explained and supervised.

Compression supplies
Compressions are adjusted for various physical ailments. The areas of application are venous return difficulties, lymphatic drainage difficulties or burns. Compression supplies are appropriate and adjusted.

Shoemaker
As an orthopedic technician, individual work of an orthopedic shoemaker can also be carried out. We offer a range of ortopedic shoes from Anova Medical  and would be happy to advise you.

Working at Laufgsund

The work of the prosthetist differs from that of the podiatrist in many ways. Especially this cooperation at Laufgsund gives great pleasure. Everyone looks at a patient's complaints from a different perspective, which is why the exchange is very intensive in our team. Through the different views, we hope to always be able to offer the best possible advice. Our goal is not to sell insoles or other aids directly, but to find an individual solution together with the patient.

If we don't know what to do at one point, we can exchange information, support and help each other. This multidisciplinary collaboration, which we have also been offering with our physiotherapist since January 2023, helps everyone in the team to develop and discover new perspectives in their own area of expertise.
